Romania punches above it’s weight
Despite the gloom and despair that exists around the world our collaborative Partners in Romania, Edurom, are bucking the trend by adopting innovative ways of deploying the Belbin methodology.
While many people see the Team Role model as something that is primarily about improving team performance Edurom has been busy using it to help budding entrepreneurs. Having identified that certain recuring patterns of behaviour exist among successful entrepreneurs they have been helping hundreds of potential entrepreneurs elicit whether they possess these qualities.
Armed with this information each entrepreneur was offered advice on how they could best deploy their natural talents and what action they could take to manage any shortcomings.
Another initiative was to integrate Belbin into Edurom’s managment training and development
programs. Initially I worked with them on the designing and conducting some pilot

Meet our new executive directors
Yes, here they are. Meet Scraggy and Tabby who strictly speaking do not have any official executive status, they just behave as though they have. They even had an influence on the content of this edition of News Update. (Have you ever tried using a keyboard with two cats sitting on it!) So this edition of News Update is a bit shorter than normal but I hope there will be something in it that is of interest to you.
Just for fun
When I checked into my room at the Protea hotel Johannesburg I thought what a refreshing change as clearly it was a bit quirky and different as you will see from the imaginative presentation of the towels in the picture on the left. I thought this might be a fun place to stay but I discovered that the joke was on me when I opened the toilet door. Clearly someone is having a go at me. I don’t know who it is but I have a conspiracy theory as only Ann who has 47 years of living with me knows about my toilet habits in detail and only Carol, supposedly my friend and collaborative partner in South Africa had access to the hotel facilities. Okay, you might laugh when you hover or click your mouse over the picture on the right but just remember Shapers do have feelings!

Belbin used to help people secure employment in the States of Jersey
The Scenario
The States of Jersey initiated and funded an ‘Advance Plus Employment Scheme’ to facilitate and support adults in securing employment in a difficult economic climate.
The intention of the scheme was to demonstrate to prospective employers that the people involved in the scheme had demonstrated an eagerness to learn new skills by committing themselves to a programme of personal development.
The Approach
Jackie Bullivant of Platform 4 Training designed and facilitated a programme to help people understand and make the most of their natural attributes. This included providing each person with a Belbin GetSet report to support the process of:
- Raising self-
awareness of natural strengths and how to use this information to make informed decisions about the type of work at which they are likely to excel. - Using mentored support to help each person make a case for how their specific behavioural strengths can be used to enhance the job application process.
- Understanding how the interview advice contained within each person’s report can be used to best effect.
The above was integrated into a programme that used the Belbin video Fire, Toast and Teamwork and the Belbin active learning exercises. It also integrated training on CV writing, interview skills and identifying employer expectations to ensure each person stood out from the crowd and thereby enhanced their prospects of success when applying for a job.
The Outcome
After piloting the programme the States of Jersey regarded it as being so successful that they decided to make it part of their training bundle to those seeking work through the Advance Plus Scheme.

Fully managed Belbin profiling service goes from strength to strength
While others have been cutting back or outsourcing customer service to distant shores Ann has been busy developing our fully managed Belbin profiling service. The result is that, just as you would expect, outstanding service achieves outstanding results with clients from far and wide taking advantage of this service which takes the hassle out of getting Belbin reports completed for your training, coaching and other interventions.
All you have to do is let Ann have the email addresses of the people involved, the deadline for receiving the reports and whether you wish to use Observer Assessments. Belbin Symposium 2012
One of the must attend events to enter in your diary for 2012 is the Belbin Symposium
to be held in Cambridge on October 10-
It will adopt the format that worked so well for the 2010 Symposium whereby the emphasis was on sharing practical and beneficial uses of the Belbin methodology. Again, maximum use will be made of providing a series of concurrent workshops facilitated by leading Belbin practitioners from around the world.
