New online team building facility

An exciting new development for us is the integration of Belbin Team Role profiling into the Novicraft online active learning exercise in collaboration with Teaming Stream of Finland.

This can be described as a virtual team building programme that uses the latest technology to provide teams with a demanding team challenge.  The integration of Belbin Team Role profiling into the Novicraft award winning engaging multi-player 3D application helps ensure the participants in the exercise develop an in-depth knowledge of each other and thereby provide the basis for applying the lessons learned in the work environment.

Because team members can participate online from different venues it provides a highly cost effective approach to team building without the need for expensive travel and venue hire costs.

This reflects the fact that as both Ann and I are getting past our sell by date (she might kill me for saying this) we are continuing to focus more and more on helping our collaborative partners and the many people we have helped to become Belbin accredited deploy the Belbin methodology.  This enables us to spend more time at Little Gringley and enjoy the rural countryside. (See the photo on the right and you will get an idea of why we quite like it here.)

I hope you will enjoy reading this edition of News Update and also like the new design and layout.  Do let me have your views and comments.

Hot Spots in South Africa

An amazing example of what happens when a team integrates and uses the power of the Belbin Team Role Methodology  - If you had been in the region of the Cabanga Conference Centre, Johannesburg, on the 22nd of August, you would have been able to feel the rising excitement that built up in one of the conference rooms.  This kind of excitement becomes a very natural occurrence when people are busy creating a Hot Spot. (A Hot Spot is defined as places and times where co-operation flourishes, creating great energy, innovation, productivity and excitement.)

As part of the programme for 13 HP team members 7i™ introduced the Belbin Team Role Inventory to support the process  of creating Hot Spots?  After identifying the current roles of all the team members, the HP team was able to see where the gaps were within in the team with regards to the various roles that are needed to create balance, or put in another way, the right match to create a Hot Spot and make the sparks fly, in a good way.

By using the Hot Spots and the Belbin Team Role model, the HP team was able to acknowledge their current team status and make meaningful steps forward as well as identify every individual’s role within the team which enabled them to fill in the missing gaps that are needed to create balance and energy within the team.

HP decided that instead of drifting along on an open sea of no excitement except for the ever pending dread from wild unpredictable storms, they wanted to rock the boat and set their own pace and create their own waves.  Their actions and mindset indicated that if the boat should tip because of all the commotion, that they as a team would take on the challenge and create unexpected – walk on the water!

Belbin and strategy integration

We need to embed our strategy? That was the challenge facing Pegler Yorkshire Group in the UK. Glen Ford, of HobsonFord Associates – a Belbin accredited consultant trained by CERT – helped the business to formulate a new corporate plan using the Argenti five stage business planning system (For more details, including a case study go to: http://www.hobsonford.co.uk/strategy_belbin.html).

As the assignment progressed it was recognised that wider buy-in was vital to get the new strategy implemented.  Glen, a specialist in the Argent system, has been a consistent advocate of the message: “You cannot separate people from plans, as one without the other is only half the answer.”  His solution has been to use the Argenti System to provide organisations with an effective corporate plan and the Belbin Team Role methodology to ensure everyone understands their role, individually and in teams, in the implementing the strategy.

Starting with the senior management group the combination of Argenti and Belbin is proving to be the perfect partnership.

If you would like details about how the Argenti and Belbin Team Role methodology combines please contact Glen at glen.ford@hobsonford.co.uk

Just for fun

If you get an automated response to your email saying “I can’t respond to your emails today, something has crashed on my computer and the mouse has gone missing”  Just smile and ignore it!  It’s one of Ann’s jokes and they are worse than mine!
