Belbin in India

People often ask me how the Belbin methodology works in different cultures.  Well, my experience is that it is enthusiastically embraced around the world and I have already used is with over 20 nationalities this year.  To provide an alternative view of this however I asked Ravi Sundaram, managing director of CERT-India, to share with us his experiences. Here's what he had to say:

Belbin Team Role profiling has received a very positive response from the Indian Corporates.  The robustness of the concept, the practicality of its application and underlying philosophy have made Belbin Team Role methodology a very potent tool which has been applied in the following contexts:

  • Creating self awareness, building better working relationships, adoption as an organization wide philosophy for better performance, and putting together appropriate teams [TATA Sky]

  • Identifying the issues in an existing team to help organize and put together a more cohesive team for specific tasks [TVS Motor]

  • Top management working, selection of people and matching people with appropriate jobs [Abbott India, United Spirits, Schwing Stetter]

  • Organization wide philosophy for better performance [Quantum Market Research]

  •  Improving managerial effectiveness [The Oberoi Group, Zydus Cadila, Volvo India, Bharati Televenture, TATA Motors]

Bearing in mind that CERT-India was only formed three years ago the growth of the company and the widespread adoption of the Belbin methodology in India has been one of the most exciting initiatives in which I have been involved.  I'm now looking forward to my next visit to run more Belbin Accreditation courses in India and Sri Lanka in July.  (See below for more details)

Become a Belbin Accredited Consultant

As more and more organisations are insisting that people using tools and assessments such as Belbin are properly qualified the demand for the Belbin Accreditation training courses means they now tend to get booked up very quickly.  If you would like to become a Belbin Accredited consultant therefore make a note of the remaining open courses I shall be running in 2008.

17-18 July - Bangalore India
21-22 July - Colombo Sri Lanka
7-8 October - Ireland
14-15 October - London

Alternatively, if you have 6 to 8 people who are interested in attending a course we can arrange a highly cost-effective in-company course for you anywhere in the world.  For more information please contact me at barrie.watson@cert-uk.info.

New Belbin Book and DVD

One of the things that saddens me most about using the Belbin methodology with people is that despite them proclaiming how interesting and useful their Belbin reports are they fail to put the information to full use.  Of course, there are many exceptions to this, particularly when the feedback is provided as part of a performance improvement initiative and managed by a trained facilitator.  That's why I place so much emphasis on this during the accreditation training courses.  The truth is however that there are still a lot of people wondering how to put the information contained in their Belbin Team Role profile report to good use.  This was the reason behind Nigel Belbin and a few of us at Belbin Associates getting together to write a  new book called Succeeding at Work containing lots of practical advice on using Belbin to do what it says on the cover of the book.  Priced at 9.99 GBP it is good value and ideal for use by people who wish to maximise their potential or for use by facilitators as training support material.  For more information please use this link: http://www.btinternet.com/~cert/succeeding-at-work.htm

Another useful new addition to the Belbin range of products is a new DVD called Fire, Toast and Teamwork. This explains the Belbin Team Role model and provides a useful resource for trainers, facilitators, HR consultants, team leaders, educationalists and anyone who needs to help people understand the Belbin Team Role model.  At a cost of 600 GBP it is around half the price of the Video Arts DVD I have been using for the last 15 years or so for this purpose, and even I must admit, is a bit dated now. You will find more information on Fire, Toast and Teamwork at: http://www.btinternet.com/~cert/fire-toast-teamwork.htm

Belbin Conference 2008

The programme for the Belbin Conference to be held in Cambridge on 10-11 July has now been finalised. This year it is adopting a one day format with an option to attend a gala dinner on 10 July and stay over to look at some of the latest developments and additions to the Belbin range on 11 July.

There is a mix of presentations, including one by Meredith Belbin, and a number of seminars and workshops.  I particularly recommend the one which will be facilitated by John Burns who has been applying the Belbin methodology for even longer that me.  John will be supported by Winston Pond of New Zealand and I am confident you will learn something new and useful by attending this seminar on the theme Taking Belbin Further.

I shall also be conducting a seminar to offer a few thoughts and ideas on how Belbin can be used for Management Development purposes.  It is really about me sharing with you some of the things I have done in this context over the years and I shall also be providing a new Belbin Team Role related management style report I have created.  If after reading this newsletter you feel you can stomach an hour or so with me do come along.  I shall be pleased to see you.

New GetSet Online Assessments for Young People

One of the main aspirations of Meredith Belbin and myself have shared over a number of years is to help young people form a clearer view about their natural behavioural tendencies.  Armed with this information better choices could be made with career planning and deciding which educational qualifications would be most useful.  Clearly this would be of great value to young people but unfortunately the standard Self Perception Inventory and Observer Assessments don't really work very well with young people as the terminology used is not contextually relevant to people who don't have workplace experience.

It is with some satisfaction therefore that I can tell you that we now have the GetSet young persons version of the Self Perception Inventory and Observer Assessments up and running online. My partner Ann has already introduced it to some organisations in UK and overseas with good results, one of who was Chris Cordery of Aurora TDS and here's what he had to say about it:

"I found it to be extremely user friendly with responses to inputs arriving back within seconds.  Furthermore, GetSet is proving to be a real hit with students.  They are finding it fascinating to understand themselves better and having fun applying Team Roles thinking to their own team working scenarios."  If you would like to ask Chris for more information about his experiences in using GetSet please contact him at: chris.cordery@aurora-tds.co.uk website: www.aurora-tds.co.uk.

Just for Fun

Emails are part of our life now and although they provide a wonderfully quick and inexpensive method communication they can be a pain, particularly when you are inundated with so much junk mail.  One of the answers to dealing with emails of course is to set up an automated response and as my contribution to your wellbeing here are a few samples you can use:

"I am currently out at a job interview and will reply to you if I fail to get the position. Be prepared for my mood."

"You are receiving this automatic notification because I am out of the office. If I was in, chances are you wouldn't have received anything at all."

"I will be unable to delete all the unread, useless emails you send me until I return from holiday in two weeks time. Please be patient and your mail will be deleted in the order it was received."

"Thank you for your message, which has been added to a queuing system. You are currently in 352nd place and can expect to receive a reply in approximately 19 weeks."

"I've run away to join a different circus."

"I will be out of the office for the next 2 weeks for medical reasons. When I return, please refer to me as 'Margaret' instead of 'Steve'."

Maybe you can come it with some good ones of your own and let me have them to brighten up my life
